Goathland Cricket Club was formed in 1874 originally playing at another location within the Parish they moved to the current site in 1878, buying the freehold of the land in 1996. It sits alongside The Old Railway Line which is a public bridleway and where some twelve English Oak trees were planted in 1920 by Mrs Kate Smailes in memory of the twelve men from the village who paid the ultimate price in the Great War, one of whom was her son George. A number of these men played for the village team prior to the conflict, all of whom are remembered on the Village War Memorial and on a cast plaque to the rear of St Mary's Church.
