Protecting parks and playing fields forever

Harefield Village Green

Fields in Trust is the only national charity protecting and improving outdoor sport and recreational space for future generations. Through our work we create a legacy for sport and play in all communities. Since 1925, our aim has been to ensure that everyone – young or old, living in urban or rural areas – has access to free, local facilities for healthy outdoor activity.

We protect over 2,500 parks, playing fields and playgrounds through legal binding agreements that are both flexible and robust.

Fields in Trust protects and supports a wide range of sites including playing fields, multi-sport pitches, children's play areas, bicycle trails, nature reserves, country parks and many more.

Each site we safeguard will receive a commemorative plaque as a permanent reminder of its protected status, and will have access to the on-going support we offer, including access to on-line resources to help ensure the success and sustainability of each outdoor space we protect.

We deliver a range of targeted protection programmes.

War Memorial Park, CoventryCentenary Fields

In 2014 The Duke of Cambridge launched our Centenary Fields programme in partnership with The Royal British Legion and poppyscotland as we seek to protect 500 memorial playing fields.

Through Centenary Fields, Fields in Trust will protect, in perpetuity, war memorial playing fields, parks and green spaces that include war memorials, as a living remembrance to those who died, whilst providing a much needed recreational facility for future generations.

Fields in Trust Protection is the protection that we offer at all times outside of bespoke programmes. This protection is often generated by our existing partnerships with landowners, the referrals that are directed to Fields in Trust through partnerships we have established with partners such as Sport England, Green Flag Award, and the National Governing Bodies of Sport.

In 2010 the Charity embarked on the most ambitious and successful land protection programme of its kind ever undertaken in the UK. The Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge has successfully protected over 1,300 green and recreation spaces across the UK. Together, these sites total over 20,000 acres - equivalent to more than 12,000 full-size football pitches. In Scotland, the programme was named the Queen Elizabeth Fields Challenge.

This programme was sponsored by Asda.

Fields in Trust was founded in 1925 by King George V and over 500 King George V Playing Fields were created in memory of our founder, which continue to be safeguarded by Fields in Trust.

We are also thrilled that our current President is King George V's Great-Great-Grandson, our President, HRH The Duke of Cambridge.
