Alexandra Gardens are in the heart of Cardiff’s Civic Centre and date back to 1903. The gardens contain the Welsh National War Memorial, an imposing monument made from Portland stone which was dedicated in 1928. It is the focus of Cardiff’s annual civic act of remembrance in November. Other memorials in the gardens recall more recent conflicts. The gardens are formal, laid out in geometric style, with deep flower beds and mature trees. It is a place for reflection but also a social meeting point, being situated in the university quarter of the city.
