Lilian Bland Community Park is situated in the urban area of Glengormley and is one of the closest parks to the town centre. The space includes a play park, bowling green, pavilion, tennis court, casual football pitch and areas of open green space.
Previously known as Glengormley Park, in 2011 Newtownabbey Borough Council renamed the space after one of the area’s most famous residents. In 1910, Lilian Bland became the first female in the world to design, build and fly an airplane, the Mayfly on Carnmoney Hill which overlooks the park. She lived a few hundred yards from the park, which now includes a replica model of the airplane.
The War Memorial was erected in memory of those from Glengormley and the wider area who gave their lives in the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts. Each year a cross community service is held at the memorial, attended by local clergy, schools, civic representatives and the local community.
