Oxleas Wood is ancient woodland, 8,000 years old, and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as home to Severndroog Castle. There is a popular café in the woods and an active Friends Group. Records of Oxleas Woodland date back to the 12th century and the woodland management is recorded as back as the mid 14th century. Oxleas Woods were acquired by the London County Council for public recreation in 1930 and opened to the public in 1934. Ownership passed from the Greater London Council to the London Borough of Greenwich in 1986. Oxleas Woods is considered to be the largest area of ancient Woodlands close to central London. Oxleas Woods has good wheelchair access with a disabled toilet and an entrance close to the Café which also has good access into the café.
