Polegate’s War Memorial Recreation Ground is a well-used space which is home to football and cricket teams as well as a well-equipped children’s playground, a basketball area and a pavilion.
The space was established in 1922 after five acres of land was purchased by three local men, Rupert Sackville Gwynne MP, Clement Knight and Alfred Pain Wiggins. Local subscription had fallen short of the amount required for a conventional memorial and so the land was obtained as a war memorial recreation ground and gifted to the Town Council in 1926 for it to be used by the inhabitants of Polegate for the purposes of recreation. A granite plinth and plaque located to the left of the entrance identifies the origins of the land which is dedicated to the 33 local young men who lost their lives in the conflict.
