Brighton’s war memorial is located in the formal Old Steine Gardens which provide opportunity for gentle relaxation in the busy centre of the city. The memorial commemorates those from the area who fell during conflict including 2,597 men and three women who gave their lives during World War I and is based on a Roman water garden.
A semi-enclosed temple, formed by a rectangular panel of stone carved with theatres of World War I, sits at the centre o f a colonnade of four-sided columns and in front of the temple is a memorial pool with fountain. The Memorial is dedicated to “The Service Men and Women of Brighton Who Gave Their Lives In The First World War1914-1918 The Second World War 1939-1945 And Subsequent Campaigns”.
