Thornton Memorial Park is located centrally in the village of Thornton near Kirkcaldy and is highly-valued by the local population. The park features a play area, multi-use games area and a garden which have been supported by community fundraising as well as football pitches where two local teams play.
The park was opened on 24th September 1921, transferring to local authority ownership in 1958, and features memorial gates at its entrance. Plaques are attached to each of the 2.2m high stone gate posts with the left-hand post listing the names of the local men from the Black Watch (3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland) and right-hand post listing those from the King’s Own Scottish Borderers who fell during World War I. In total 40 names are listed.
